CASE STUDY: SRSA Lewisham Platform Realignment Project

Client: Colas Rail
Duration: 5 months (August – December 2022)
Summary: ASH Construction Group undertook the Lewisham Platform Realignment Project with the aim of improving gauge clearance and passenger safety on platforms 1 to 4 at Lewisham station. The project involved overcoming logistical challenges due to the elevated platform structures and the need for precise scheduling around active rail operations.

Project Description:

Objective: Realign platforms at Lewisham station to enhance gauge clearance and reduce passenger stepping distances.
Key Actions:

  • Managed elevated platform access and worked around train schedules to minimize disruptions.
  • Executed work primarily during midweek nights, weekend closures, and a Christmas blockade to ensure project completion without impacting daytime rail operations.

Scope of works:

  • Platform Realignment: Realigned 547 linear meters (Lm) of platform copers across platforms 1 to 4.
  • Tac-Tile Replacement: Replaced 490 Lm of concrete and adhesive Tac-Tiles for improved platform accessibility.
  • Tarmac Renewal: Resurfaced 1,100 m² of platform area with new tarmac.
  • Under-Platform Repairs: Conducted multiple structural repairs beneath the platforms to enhance long-term durability.

Challenges and Solutions:

Complex Access & Logistics:

  • The elevated platforms and limited space demanded strategic planning for material deliveries, ensuring manageable load sizes and efficient work sequencing.
  • Began with Platform 4, realigning 150 Lm across 10 midweek night shifts, followed by similar processes for Platforms 1, 2, and 3. Carefully coordinated each phase to match scheduled railway closures, minimizing disruptions to active rail services.

Material Distribution:

  • Distributing materials during rail operations required meticulous timing and logistical planning. Employed RRVs and HIAB cranes for heavy material transport during night shifts.
  • In tight areas like Platform 1, where large machinery could not operate, materials were manually moved using trolleys

Night and Weekend Work Scheduling:

  • Conducted most work during night shifts and weekend closures, necessitating rapid mobilization to complete tasks within limited time frames and ensure the site was ready for morning rail services.
  • To minimize noise and light disruption to nearby residents, used targeted lighting and sound barriers, limiting heavy machinery operation times.

Outcome and Impact:

  • Successful Execution: ASH Construction Group completed the Lewisham Platform Realignment Project within budget, maintaining high safety and operational standards.
  • Enhanced Safety and Accessibility: The realignment resulted in improved gauge clearance and reduced stepping distances for passengers, reinforcing ASH’s capacity to deliver complex rail infrastructure projects efficiently and safely.
