CASE STUDY: Sellindge Sub Station Project | Civils

Project Overview:

Overview Client: J. Murphy & Sons

Duration: 13 months (March 2022 – June 2023)

Project Description and Scope:

The Sellindge Sub Station project involved the reinstatement of a fire-damaged sub-station in Sellindge, Kent. The scope was extensive and included both the restoration of existing structures and the enhancement of the facility’s functionality and aesthetic appeal. The project required meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to quality, given the historic and functional importance of the sub-station.

Brick and Blockwork Restoration:

  • Brickwork: The project required the reinstatement of approximately 145,000 bricks. This task was not merely a straightforward restoration; it involved meticulous matching of new bricks with the existing ones to maintain architectural continuity. The challenge lay in ensuring the bricks met modern standards while preserving the historical integrity of the structure working closely with architects and designers to incorporate modern design elements, which not only enhanced the visual appeal but also improved the operational efficiency of the facility.
  • Concrete Blocks: Additionally, the project involved the installation of over 8,000concrete blocks. These were crucial in reinforcing the main basement, switch rooms, and motor rooms, thereby enhancing the sub-station's structural integrity and safety.

Challenges and Solutions:

  •  Time Constraints: The project was on a tight schedule, with the team working six days a week. This rigorous schedule was necessary to meet the client's deadlines and ensure the sub-station was operational as soon as possible.
  • Technical and Logistical Issues: The team faced challenges related to sourcing materials that matched the existing structure and met the updated design requirements. They successfully overcame these issues through careful planning and coordination with suppliers and contractors.

Outcome and Impact:

The Sellindge Sub Station project was a significant success, despite encountering numerous challenges due to design and access changes. Nevertheless, the reinstatement and upgrades not only restored the sub-station to its former glory but also ensured it met contemporary standards for functionality and safety. The project demonstrated ASH Construction Group's commitment to quality, client satisfaction, and the ability to handle complex, large-scale projects.
