Summary: ASH Construction Group was contracted to install a new STRAIL level crossing at Woodfield Lane in Ashtead. This project required careful planning and coordination, as the crossing served as the sole access point to a local housing estate, demanding uninterrupted access for residents and emergency services.
Project Scope:
Objective: Install a new STRAIL level crossing while ensuring continuous access for residents and emergency services.
Key Actions:
- Coordinated closely with stakeholders to devise temporary access solutions.
- Maintained open access to the housing estate throughout the project to minimize disruptions.
Description of Works:
- Preliminary Surveys: Conducted topographical surveys to assess track geometry, road levels, and conditions.
- Safety Measures: Implemented barricades, signage, and traffic management systems for safe on-site operations.
- Materials Management: Supplied STRAIL components, prefabricated panels, rubber units, and other necessary civil materials like asphalt and concrete.
- Dismantling: Removed existing level crossing components, including rail, ballast, and road surface, with minimal disruption. Old materials were disposed of responsibly.
- Removal of Rubber Crossing: Cleared old rubber level crossing to enable track work.
- STRAIL Panel Installation: Installed modular, rubberized STRAIL panels that interlock and accommodate high vehicle loads.
- Transition Areas: Applied asphalt or concrete in areas transitioning from STRAIL panels to the existing road for a smooth crossing.
- Resurfacing and Lining: Laid new asphalt and applied hot lay white and yellow lines within highway areas under a road closure.
- Safety Enhancements: Used yellow and white anti-slip rubberized paint on trackside areas to improve safety for vehicles and pedestrians.
Challenges:
- Housing Estate Access: Maintaining continuous access to the housing estate required the construction of a temporary bridge, essential for emergency service access and resident convenience.
- Emergency Service Coordination: Collaborated closely with local emergency services to ensure uninterrupted access during critical phases of construction.
Results:
- Successful Completion: The project was completed on schedule with minimal disruption to residents and emergency services.
- Enhanced Safety and Accessibility: The newly installed STRAIL crossing offers a smoother, safer transition for vehicles, reflecting ASH Construction Group's commitment to high-quality, logistically complex civil and rail works.
